NIW Self – Petition Timeline

By Shanni You

Applying for a National Interest Waiver (NIW) can be a daunting process, especially when navigating it on your own. But with careful planning, a meticulous approach, and unyielding perseverance, I managed to sail through the journey. In this blog, I’ll share a detailed timeline of my self-petitioned NIW application to provide some guidance and insights for those considering a similar path.

Day 1: The Initiation

  • Began my research on NIW requirements and eligibility criteria.
  • Consulted with friends and colleagues who had undergone the process. Their insights were invaluable.
  • Decided to self-petition and started gathering primary documents.

Day 2 – 6: Document Compilation

  • Spent time accumulating personal documents, academic records, and other required paperwork.
  • Drafted my petition letter and meticulously reviewed USCIS guidelines to ensure alignment.
  • Contacted potential recommendation letter writers, providing them with drafts and guidelines.

Day 7: Finalizing Application

  • Collated all the supporting documents, including the recommendation letters, personal statement, and research publications.
  • Double-checked each element against USCIS requirements.
  • Packaged and sent off my application!
